New York!

Hi friends!

Well, here I am in New York City. CRAZY!!!! I cannot believe that I actually live here now. I am a Seattle girl, through and through, so it was really a long shot that we would ever actually make this move. But, we did it! My husband is LOVING his new job, the kids and I are adjusting slowly our new life, and we're just taking things one day at a time. The hardest part is how much we miss our family and friends. But, we're starting to get excited about all the things we can see in this vast, amazing, wacky city. I already caught a glimpse of the new Freedom Tower under construction and that was COOL. I have a whole list of things we're going to try and see this week so, I'll keep you posted!

Meanwhile, I'm just starting to get my writing groove back. Anyone else out there thinking of doing NaNoWriMo? If you don't know about National Novel Writing Month, here is a link to the website. You write 50,000 words during the month of November and people ALL OVER THE WORLD are doing it with you! You get pep talks from famous writers, and you record your word count every day so you can actually SEE the progress on this handy dandy little graphic they have. It's not for everyone, but I definitely credit NaNoWriMo with "giving" me my novel a few years ago. I finally just wrote it all out, with very little self-editing. It was great!

So, let me know if you're joining me on this quest and we can share the joy and the pain of forcing yourself to write almost 2,000 words a day. I am furiously outlining right now, so I'd better get back to it. I leave you with a little Frank Sinatra, to celebrate my new city. Cheers!

  1. Welcome to the East Coast!! I hope settling in goes smoothly! One of my favorite places in/near the city is The Cloisters (part of the Met, but in a different location), which was reassembled out of pieces from a medieval French monastery. It's beautiful! My husband and I went one on of our first dates there.
I'm on the fence about NaNoWriMo....But people like you keep overriding my arguments not to do it!

  2. I'm so glad you all made it safely and are settling! Even though you're in the same country I can imagine you'll have a little bit of culture shock. :) But how fun to explore the city! Enjoy!!

  3. Glad to hear you're settling in. We'll hold the fort down for you out here in the Pacific North Wet.

I'm going to use NaNoWriMo to FINISH my novel. I probably only have 10,000 words or so left, then a re-structure of the middle to catch up with all the course changes.

    It'll be interesting…

  5. So good to hear from you all!

Faith! I love knowing that you're nearby, and hope we will meet up at a conference. That would be lovely! I will check out the Cloisters--sounds incredible. I hope you do NaNo!

Amy, It is TOTAL culture shock. But we are discovering it bit by bit. My plan is one outing a day. That's about all we can manage. : )

Kevin ~ Hello! Great to see you here! And thanks for identifying yourself--though I love the alias! : ) Thanks for holding down the fort in the NW. I miss Seattle SO much! And thanks for sharing your plan for NaNoWriMo. That sounds SMART. You're using it the way YOU need it. Let me know how it goes!

So great to connect with my blog buddies!

  6. Molly! Fun to read your post! I saw Faith's comment, and I think we're in the same camp: on the fence. I am not sure if it's the right way for me to tackle my new project, but I know it really works for tons of people. Since my process evolves with each year, I may eventually try it! If I do, I want to go in the way you are, with a really good outline!

  8. Thanks, Kjersten! Yes, it is wild and hard to believe, even for me. NOT the path I thought my life was taking. But, isn't that always the way? So far we're doing really well. I'll keep you posted! : )
